Mr Hughes

Welcome to Reception 2!

Welcome to Reception 2 where a love of learning is at the heart of everything we do! The teachers in our classroom are Mr Hughes (Assistant Head) & Mrs Flanagan and we have the support of 3 fantastic teaching assistants in Mrs Doyle, Mrs Borg Fenech and Mrs Ashley.

In the EYFS we challenge children to become independent learners through the continuous provision and targeted learning challenges. We are looking forward to sharing the fantastic work we do with you all, watch this space for regular updates!

Spring 2

This half term begins with Book Week 2018 where we will be celebrating our favourite books and sharing them together. Mrs Barlow has planned some fantastic events including the Bake a Book competition, The big bedtime read and a visit from an author. Photos will be uplaoded to our page throughout the week.

In Reception this half term our topic is 'The Moon'. In Literacy we will be receiving a postcard from the moon and a box of objects to build a rocket! We will then be using Whatever Next by Jill Murphy and The Way Home by Oliver Jeffers to inspire our independent writing. In Maths we will be learning how to subtract two single digit numbers and we have lots of space themed lessons planned for this. In Understanding the World we are going to be learning about the moon and looking at Astronauts that have been into space.

Its going to be a very busy 5 weeks in school!

Summer 1

This half term we are looking at lots of egg-citing things! Our topic is called 'Out of the Egg' and we will begin the half term by reading 'The Odd Egg' by Emily Gravett. From this, we will be looking at what types of animals hatch out of eggs and doing lots of experiments with eggs. This will lead onto dinosaurs, and we are going to read the story 'How to Grow a Dinosaur' by Caryl Hart and Ed Eaves. The children will be doing lots of work around life-cycles and growth throughout this half-term so keep a look out for all of our eggs-periments!

In maths we will be continuing our work on additon and subtraction as well as learning how to double, halve and share.

Summer 2

In the scond half of our summer term Reception children will be learning all about minibeasts! In literacy we will be reading Superworm and What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson and our focus this term in preparation for Year 1 will be independent writing. In maths we are going to be continuing to order numbers to 20 and working out 1 more/less in our heads, we will also be practicing doubling and halving in word problems.
